hacker zero, me one

May 9, 2015

One up for the computer nerd here this evening.

My friend told me today her daughter had been hacked and had not had any emails since 28 April. She gave me her log in details and I told her I would have a look.

The naughty person from Kabul who had hacked her account had set up an auto-forward so any new emails were forwarded to a new bogus email account. They then sent out a “plea for money” email and then deleted her contacts list.  The daughter then worked out she had been hacked, changed her password and the notification was then sent to the bogus email account. With a simple “this was not me” notification to Yahoo, they then had control.

So I reversed all this out, changed the password ( try and guess it this time naughty Kabul hacker person!), and hopefully she is good to go.

Will check again tomorrow just to be sure.

the last laugh

Well right about now, there is someone not too far from where I live cursing me. You see six months ago some delightful person hacked into my wifi device and has been using my internet data allowance.

I could not work out why I have been chewing through heaps of data lately. Before Christmas I  bought enough internet data to last me twelve months. You can imagine how puzzled I was when I had used it all by March! So I topped it up for another six months …. this time it only lasted 30 days.

So I checked my usage this morning and saw I had been using the internet in my sleep. Imagine that. A quick call to Optus, they refunded me my “stolen” data and put two new passwords on my account.

Between new passwords and turning the device off when I am not using it, should protect me from any more stolen data allowances.

volunteering

So I have been thinking about how I can give back, pay to forward … call it what you will. My life is comfortable and it often leaves me wondering about what I could offer to others.

I like my computer and playing around with websites so I thought perhaps I could offer something to a not-for-profit. I play around here on my blog, I have smartened up my bridge club’s website, I keep an eye on one of the sites at work, and have built a new site for my neighbour who is a cabinet maker.

I have also offered my time to The Friends of Amamoor who want a new website to support their increased drive to revive the running of the Mary Valley Rattler.

I wouldn’t want to charge anyone, but do you think there are groups who might want a website to support their activities? Perhaps I will consult Mr Google and see what opportunities I can find.
