Despite the slight bias towards showcasing australian athletes, I’m finding myself watching more of the Paralympics on TV than I did when the Olympics were on. I have watched disciplines that do not normally interest me, and of course the usual favourites.
Unlike the Olympics, the vibe and the atmosphere surrounding these games just seems ‘nicer’. The competitive spirit is there, but the nasty aggression seems to be absent. Interviews with athletes are inspiring and heart-warming, and there is genuine visible delight from both athletes and media for brilliant performances. Like the young swimmer who beat her personal best by 19 seconds and was so excited she kept tripping over her words.
If I had a magic wand, I wish we could go back to the good old days where bad sportsmanship did not exist, where anti-doping agencies were not required, and where participation was celebrated as much as the end result.
