Not reaching your targets or goals? Well it was going to happen sooner or later. The difference between you and the next person is what you do about it.
First of all you have to acknowledge that you’re off track and accept it. There is no point in berating yourself because you did not hit a target/goal. You didn’t, end of story. Stop, give yourself a stern talking to and work out what you have to do to get back on track. Remind yourself why you set the goal in the first place. Was it to improve your job prospects, to develop new skills, or something else? If it was a well-considered goal, it will still be relevant.
When you are setting your goals, allow room for slip-ups and ‘off days’. After all you are only human. While your goals should be stretching, don’t make them unachievable as this will not help your motivation or confidence levels.
If I find I am behind target or have lost sight of my goals, I allow myself (at the most) half a day of wallowing in self-pity. Then I dust myself off and get back to it. Having a good friend who is in tune with the way you think is also helpful. They are always more than happy to give you the mental ‘kick’ you need but are unwilling to do to yourself.
