the NZ national anthem

I have to agree with encouraging more people to learn the Maori version of New Zealand’s national anthem. Let’s be honest, there are not that many lines to remember. And if you’re bellowing it out along with several hundred other people at a sporting event, you’d even be forgiven for some slight pronounciation errors.

Mr Nielsen has written to various MPs suggesting that the text is shown along the bottom of the tv screen when sports teams sing it. I think that’s a brilliant idea. Cheap, unobtrusive and (if you are tuneless) you’d have the option of practicing in the privacy of your own lounge.

Just so there is no excuse, here are the words for you to start your practice with.

E Ihowa Atua
O ngā iwi mātou rā
āta whakarongona
Me aroha noa.
Kia hua ko te pai
Kia tau tō atawhai
Manaakitia mai
Aotearoa.

And given the All Whites brilliant result this morning with its 1-1 draw to Italy “the world champions”, we may need it sooner rather than later.
