A friend of mine met a lovely guy at a rugby game when the British and Irish Lions were out in New Zealand back in 2005. They clicked right from the start and even though they lived in different countries, so began their long-distance relationship.
Now my friend by her own admission was a commitment-phobe but the Brit stuck with her. The best moment for us all was when she came home last year wearing a very sparkly diamond on her left hand. Over the past four years there have been regular holidays. Sometimes England comes to NZ, sometimes NZ goes to England, and sometimes they meet in a ‘mutually convenient’ country.
But yesterday was bitter-sweet for her friends as we had her farewell dinner last night. After four years she is packing up and emigrating to England. The Brit may have stolen her heart, but I am sure she will keep a little corner of it just for New Zealand.
So slainte my friend, you will be missed. May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; and rains fall softly upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
